A tiny toast for the latte giant
Jefferies just moved Starbucks up a rung, upgrading the stock from underperform to hold and lifting its price target to $92 from $86. In Wall Street speak, that’s basically: “Still not in love, but we’re no longer sprinting for the exits.”
Why this matters
The new target still points to roughly 4.8% downside from the prior close, so don’t mistake this for a full-on bull stampede. But for a stock that’s been trying to convince investors the turnaround is real, even a softer tone from the skeptics helps.
The bigger Starbucks plotline
Jefferies’ call lands in the middle of a pretty mixed backdrop:
- Starbucks just posted $0.56 EPS, missing the $0.59 estimate
- Revenue came in at $9.92 billion, ahead of expectations
- The company also guided FY2026 EPS to $2.15 to $2.40
So the story is classic Starbucks: the top line still has some caffeine, but the profitability recovery is doing a slow jog, not a victory lap. Meanwhile, the analyst crowd is sitting on a consensus Hold, which is about as excited as a barista during a Monday morning rush.
What investors should watch
If Starbucks keeps showing revenue resilience and can get margins moving in the right direction, analysts may keep inching higher. But for now, the market seems to be treating the stock like a decent neighborhood café: useful, familiar, and not exactly cheap.
Big picture: this is less a “buy immediately” moment and more a “maybe the fix is working” signal.
