Citi’s not exactly jogging — it’s power-walking
Citigroup’s Q1 2026 earnings call had a familiar message: the turnaround story is still alive, and it’s getting less hand-wavy by the quarter. The bank said its CET1 ratio came in at 12.7%, giving it a 110 basis point cushion above the 11.6% regulatory minimum. Translation: Citi isn’t sweating the capital cops.
The Services engine is doing the heavy lifting
The shiny part of the report was Services. Revenue there grew 17%, new client mandates rose 40%, deposits were up 16%, and ROTCE hit 27%. That’s the kind of combo that gets investors leaning forward instead of doom-scrolling.
Rules that could help, not hurt?
CFO Gonzalo Luchetti also flagged Basel III and GSIB reform, saying the current proposals could bring Citi a “moderate net benefit.” For a bank that has spent years talking about simplification, compliance, and cleanup, that’s a pretty welcome plot twist.
The boring work still matters
Management also said most of the target-state work is done, with the last stretch centered on data used in regulatory reporting. In other words: the glamorous part is over, and now comes the spreadsheet-and-audit-team finale. Not exactly Broadway, but it’s the kind of plumbing that keeps regulators happy and avoids future headaches.
Big picture: Citi is still a work in progress, but this quarter gives investors a little more reason to believe the machine is slowly becoming less messy and more profitable.
