Policy talent is moving again
Coinbase just waved goodbye to Tom Duff Gordon, its Vice President of International Policy, who is heading to OpenAI to run policy across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He’d been at Coinbase for nearly four years, which in crypto years is basically a long-term lease.
Why you should care
This isn’t a headline about a product launch or a flashy new feature. It’s about the boring-but-critical stuff: regulators, lawmakers, and all the grown-ups who can make life easier or harder for crypto companies. When someone with deep policy experience leaves, investors usually file it under “not catastrophic, but definitely worth watching.”
The timing matters
Coinbase is still operating in a world where regulation can swing sentiment fast, and policy leadership is one of those behind-the-scenes muscles that helps the business keep momentum. Losing a senior government-facing exec doesn’t break the thesis, but it does raise the question: who’s steering the legislative ship now?
Big picture: this looks more like a talent transfer than a business alarm bell, but in crypto, the politics desk is never just the politics desk.
