Jefferies says “maybe slow your roll”
Phillips 66 just got a little less love from Jefferies Financial Group, which downgraded the refiner from strong-buy to hold. Not exactly a cinematic villain turn, but still a reminder that Wall Street is no longer treating PSX like a one-way ticket to the moon.
The analyst room is split down the middle
Here’s the vibe: analysts are basically arguing over the thermostat.
- 11 have a Buy on the stock
- 12 say Hold
- The consensus rating sits at Hold
- The average target price is $180.72
So yes, there’s still optimism floating around. Raymond James and Wells Fargo both lifted price targets recently, which means the Street still sees value here. But Jefferies’ downgrade is a nudge that the rally may be getting a little crowded.
The numbers aren’t ugly — just mixed
Phillips 66’s latest quarter wasn’t a disaster. It posted $2.47 in EPS, topping estimates of $2.15, but revenue missed. That’s the classic “good-but-not-great” setup that can leave investors doing mental gymnastics: the earnings beat says the engine is running, but the revenue miss says the road ahead might have a few potholes.
Why you should care
The stock has been trading around $160, well below its $190.61 12-month high but miles above the $95.70 low. In other words, the market already has a decent amount of good news baked in. Add in the fact that insiders have sold about 95,923 shares worth roughly $16.4 million over the past three months, and you’ve got a name that’s still investable — just not exactly screaming bargain-bin miracle.
Big picture: Phillips 66 isn’t falling apart. But when the analyst chorus goes from “strong-buy” to “hold,” the market has to ask: how much more fuel is left in the tank?
