A little cash now, a lot of “maybe” later
AC Immune isn’t magically cured of biotech gravity, but it did get a nice assist from Eli Lilly. The two companies amended their existing collaboration around Alzheimer’s drug development, and the market responded like someone had just turned on the lights: AC Immune jumped 13.9%.
The headline number is the CHF10 million upfront payment, which gives AC Immune a fresh injection of cash and a better-looking balance sheet. In biotech, that matters. Cash is oxygen, and oxygen is what lets these companies keep the lab coats on and the pipeline moving.
Why investors perked up
The deal also keeps the door open to more than CHF1.7 billion in potential milestone payments, plus tiered royalties in the low double digits. Translation: this isn’t just a one-time check — it’s a longer-term validation of the platform if the science keeps cooperating.
And there’s a timeline to watch. AC Immune expects Investigational New Drug-enabling studies in the first half of 2026, which means the next leg of the story is clinical, not just contractual. If you own the stock, you’re now betting on two things at once:
- Lilly still thinks this program has legs
- the Oral Morphomer Tau angle can eventually turn into real-world data
Big picture
Biotech partnerships can be a lot like movie sequels: the first deal gets the hype, the amended deal tells you whether the studio still believes in the franchise. In this case, Lilly sticking around is the part that matters most. Investors now get to watch for trial progress, not just press-release confetti.
