Another data point for the obesity-pill race
Eli Lilly is back with more ammo for Foundayo, aka orforglipron, and this time the company is leaning hard on the safety story. In ACHIEVE-4, the longest Phase 3 study it has run on the drug so far, Lilly says Foundayo met its main goal by showing non-inferiority versus insulin glargine on safety — the kind of result that helps calm nerves when a drug is heading into a market where investors are basically stress-testing everything with a flashlight.
Why investors care
The headline numbers are the ones that matter: Lilly said Foundayo showed a 16% lower risk of MACE-4 events and a 23% lower risk of MACE-3 events versus insulin glargine. In a pre-planned analysis, all-cause death risk was also 57% lower. That doesn’t magically turn a clinical update into a launch-day confetti cannon, but it does strengthen the pitch that this drug can compete in a crowded cardiometabolic sandbox without tripping over safety worries.
The big picture
This matters because Lilly’s obesity and diabetes pipeline has been under a microscope lately, and every new readout is really a referendum on whether the company can keep the momentum going. A clean safety profile plus better cardiovascular metrics gives the bulls something to point at beyond just hype and market share dreams.
If you’re watching the stock, the key question is simple: does Foundayo look like a credible long-term franchise, or just another flash in the GLP-1 pan? For now, Lilly is saying the former. Big picture: in biotech, confidence is built one trial update at a time — and this one helps.
