The AI makeover is getting expensive
BigBear.ai is trying to sell investors a pretty familiar story: spend now, scale later. The company said its $250 million Ask Sage acquisition expands its AI offerings across national security, defense, and intelligence — basically the part of the market where “mission critical” can be code for “please sign the contract already.”
The numbers are doing the side-eye thing
There’s a catch, of course. Revenue dropped 20% year over year, and operating loss widened to $21.9 million. That’s not exactly the kind of print that makes growth investors leap out of bed and start chanting “AI, AI, AI.”
Cash helps, but it doesn’t magically fix the plot
On the plus side, BigBear.ai says it’s sitting on $456.6 million in cash, which gives it a lot more breathing room than your average small-cap software story. Management also raised full-year 2025 revenue guidance to $125 million-$140 million, which tells you they think the next chapter gets a little less bleak.
The big question for your portfolio
So is this the next NVIDIA? Not so fast. NVIDIA had the whole “selling the shovels during a gold rush” thing down to a science. BigBear.ai is still in the part where it’s trying to prove the gold rush is real, the shovels are useful, and the company won’t burn through too much cash before the payoff shows up.
Big picture: the acquisition and guidance hike make the bull case look more polished, but the shrinking revenue and rising losses are a reminder that AI buzz is fun until the income statement shows up.
