CVS is speeding up specialty med approvals

Less paperwork, more pills

CVS Caremark is trying to make one of healthcare’s least glamorous chores a little less painful: prior authorization. Instead of making patients wait in the bureaucratic waiting room, CVS says it’s using Surescripts Touchless Prior Authorization for select specialty drugs to speed things up.

Why this matters

If you’ve ever tried to get a prescription approved, you know the process can feel like yelling into the void. CVS says this setup helps make approvals “instant and seamless,” which is corporate-speak for: fewer forms, fewer delays, and hopefully fewer people stuck waiting for meds they actually need.

The investor angle

This isn’t the kind of announcement that moves the stock like a blockbuster acquisition or earnings surprise. But it does matter in a more subtle way:

• it supports CVS Caremark’s pharmacy-benefit workflow
• it could improve patient experience for specialty-drug users
• it helps CVS look a little more tech-enabled and less fax-machine-y

Big picture

Healthcare is slowly learning that speed is a feature, not a luxury. CVS isn’t reinventing the wheel here, but if it can shave friction out of specialty-drug access, that’s the kind of operational cleanup Wall Street tends to like in the long run.
