From chopping block to hiring spree
Novo Nordisk spent 2025 trimming hard — nearly 7,800 jobs went away in its biggest workforce reduction ever. Now the company is doing a very corporate version of “never mind,” planning to add around 2,000 employees in 2026.
Why the pivot?
This isn’t just headcount whiplash for sport. The company says the new hires will be targeted toward the parts of the business with the most momentum, especially diabetes and obesity treatments. In other words: less broad cost-slashing, more selective talent hoarding.
What it says about the business
The move comes as CEO Mike Doustdar keeps steering a restructuring effort meant to make Novo leaner, faster, and more focused. If you’re an investor, that usually reads like management thinks the growth runway is worth spending for — which is a nicer problem than cutting into the bone.
Big picture: Novo isn’t exactly going on a hiring free-for-all. But after a year of layoffs, even a few thousand new roles is a pretty loud signal that the company wants to get back on offense.
