Another day, another courtroom detour
Sable Offshore just got handed a fresh legal headache. A Santa Barbara Superior Court judge ruled that the Trump administration’s Defense Production Act order does not override prior injunctions stopping Sable from restarting its California offshore pipeline without the proper approvals.
Why this matters
That’s a problem for a company trying to turn a pipeline into a payday. California said the pipeline still needs state approval and legal permission to operate, including for the stretch crossing Gaviota State Park. Translation: the “just start pumping and sort it out later” strategy is not exactly winning in court.
The politics are loud, but the cash flows are quieter
The state is also pursuing legal action to enforce those court orders. So instead of a clean restart story, investors are staring at more permitting risk, more litigation risk, and more waiting around while lawyers rack up billable hours like they’re on a tear.
Big picture
For SOC holders, this is less “energy independence” and more “energy indecision.” Until the legal mess clears, the pipeline’s upside is still stuck behind a courthouse door.
