Another nibble at the AI stack
Nvidia isn’t content being the king of GPUs and calling it a day. Now it’s backing Vast Data in a $1 billion funding round, and that comes with a very Silicon Valley-looking $30 billion valuation attached.
Why this matters
Vast Data sits in the unglamorous-but-important part of AI: storage and data infrastructure. Translation: if AI models are the muscle, this is the plumbing. And Nvidia clearly wants its fingerprints all over the plumbing, not just the biceps.
That matters because every time Nvidia leans further into the infrastructure layer, it makes the company a little less of a one-product story and a little more of an AI ecosystem landlord. You don’t just sell the picks and shovels — you also invest in the company building the mine.
Big picture
For Nvidia shareholders, this is less about immediate revenue and more about strategic gravity. The company keeps showing up wherever AI workloads need to live, move, or get stored, which is exactly the kind of reach that can keep its moat feeling less like a moat and more like a whole continent.
