Another year-end cliffhanger
Canada’s Natural Resources Minister said the proponents behind LNG Canada will decide by the end of this year whether to push ahead with phase 2 of the project. Translation: the giant natural gas export story is still alive, but the next big green light is still sitting in the queue.
Why investors should care
LNG projects are like the world’s slowest roller coasters: lots of hype, lots of permitting, and a very long wait before the first real revenue shows up. A phase 2 expansion would mean more export capacity, which matters for companies tied to Canadian gas production, LNG infrastructure, shipping, and the broader energy trade flow.
The big picture
This isn’t a construction start, and it’s not a done deal. But a promised year-end FID keeps optionality on the table for the whole sector. If LNG Canada moves forward, it could sharpen long-term demand for upstream gas and reinforce Canada’s role in the global LNG arms race.
Big picture: the project’s still in the “Will they or won’t they?” season, but at least the finale now has a deadline.
