Micron just cranked up the factory
Micron Technology is now manufacturing its advanced 1α DRAM memory at its Manassas, Virginia facility — which, in plain English, means the company just turned on the most advanced memory chip production ever launched in the U.S. That’s not a small ribbon-cutting moment. It’s a very expensive “we’re serious about domestic semis” statement.
Why investors should care
Micron says memory is still a core building block for AI, especially in data centers, industrial systems, and automotive electronics. So while everybody else is busy arguing about which AI model wins the crown, Micron is the company making sure the servers actually have the memory to run the thing.
The move also fits into Micron’s broader $200 billion U.S. investment plan. The Virginia expansion alone tops $2 billion and is expected to:
- quadruple DDR4 wafer supply
- support industries like automotive, defense, aerospace, and medical devices
- help pave the way for qualified 1α DRAM production by the end of calendar 2026
Bigger than one plant
The company says its U.S. projects in Virginia, Idaho, and New York could eventually create about 90,000 jobs. That’s the kind of number that gets politicians smiling and chip supply chains breathing a little easier.
And because the stock already trades like it’s wearing a cape, any update that strengthens Micron’s long-term production story can matter for the valuation debate. Big picture: Micron isn’t just riding the AI wave — it’s trying to pour the concrete underneath it.
