Another green light from Europe
Novo Nordisk just got a shiny new badge from the EU’s CHMP: a positive opinion for Wegovy 7.2 mg in a single-dose pen. Translation: the obesity blockbuster is one step closer to a formal EU marketing authorization, which is the regulatory equivalent of getting through the velvet rope before the club opens.
Why investors should care
The big number here is the payoff. In the STEP UP trial, the higher-dose version of Wegovy delivered an average weight loss of 20.7%, and about one-third of patients hit 25% or greater weight loss. That’s the kind of efficacy that keeps physicians interested, patients hopeful, and competitors very awake at night.
The launch clock is ticking
Novo says it expects to launch the pen in the EU in Q3 2026. And the company’s not exactly starting from zero — Wegovy is already available in the EU in a different dosing format, and the 7.2 mg version is already on shelves in the U.S. under the Wegovy HD name. So this is less “brand-new product” and more “expand the playbook, now with extra firepower.”
Big picture
For Novo, every incremental Wegovy upgrade helps extend the life of the obesity franchise while the company tries to stay ahead in the GLP-1 derby. For investors, this is another reminder that the market isn’t just betting on one drug — it’s betting on how many ways Novo can keep turning one monster asset into a whole buffet.
