BNPL just moved out of the niche aisle
Cash App and Afterpay are teaming up to bring buy now, pay later to eligible Cash App Card customers, and the pitch is simple: make installment payments feel as ordinary as tapping your card for coffee. The service works anywhere Visa is accepted, which is basically the financial equivalent of saying, “Yeah, this thing goes everywhere.”
Why this matters
For Block, this is less about a flashy product launch and more about tightening the grip on the Cash App ecosystem. If you can pay now, pay later, and do it inside the same app you already use for money, that’s a pretty nice sticky layer of behavior. And sticky users tend to be more valuable users.
Investors should care because:
- BNPL is becoming a mainstream checkout option instead of a standalone destination
- Cash App gets a deeper product offering without needing to build a whole new consumer habit from scratch
- Every extra payment feature is another reason users keep their money inside the app instead of wandering off to a rival
The bigger picture
This is also a little peek into where consumer finance is headed: less “one giant credit card to rule them all,” more flexible pay-over-time options tucked into everyday apps. Big picture: if BNPL keeps getting woven into the plumbing of payments, the winners may be the platforms people already use, not the standalone apps screaming for attention.
