AI chips aren’t the only gold rush
GlobalFoundries is back with another AI-flavored partnership, and this time the buzzword is silicon photonics. The company says it’s working with Sivers Semiconductors to develop advanced optical solutions for AI infrastructure, with Sivers’ laser arrays set to slot into reference designs built on GF’s platform.
That matters because data centers are starting to look like they’re training for a sprint and a marathon at the same time — more AI, more bandwidth, more heat, more everything. Optical interconnects are the plumbing that keeps the whole thing from turning into a digital traffic jam.
Why investors should care
GlobalFoundries isn’t just chasing more foundry volume; it’s trying to move up the value chain. If its silicon photonics platform gains traction, it could open up a cleaner path into the booming optical components market that management says could be worth $25 billion by 2030.
For shareholders, the takeaway is pretty simple:
- this is a strategic adjacency, not a giant revenue driver today
- it deepens GF’s tie-in to the AI infrastructure buildout
- it helps frame the company as a “picks and shovels” player in the next phase of AI spending
Big picture
This isn’t a splashy earnings beat or a blockbuster deal. But in the AI race, even the boring infrastructure pieces can end up being the ones collecting the tolls. And GlobalFoundries clearly wants a booth on that road.
