AI growth, meet the cloud bill
Shopify’s Sidekick is clearly having a moment. In Q1 2026, weekly active shops using the AI assistant jumped 4x, which is the kind of growth you brag about in the group chat and put on a slide deck with confetti.
But the margin math is still annoying
The catch? More AI usage usually means more model calls, more compute, and more money leaving the building. Shopify said higher LLM costs kept Subscription Solutions margin flat at 80%, which is a pretty good margin in the grand scheme of things — but also a reminder that “AI magic” still comes with a utility bill.
Why investors should care
For Shopify, Sidekick matters because it can make the platform stickier and more valuable to merchants. If merchants lean on the tool to run their stores, they’re less likely to wander off to the ecommerce equivalent of another dating app.
What matters next is whether Shopify can do two things at once:
- keep Sidekick usage climbing
- keep the cost per AI interaction from eating the upside
That’s the whole game here. If the company can scale Sidekick without letting margins slip, investors get a cleaner AI story. If not, you’ve got a shiny feature that’s also a little too fond of the credit card.
Big picture: Shopify’s AI push is working on the product side, but the economics still need to prove they can grow up and move out of the house.
