New hype cycle, same hungry chip market
Qualcomm showed up at Computex with a message that basically boils down to: the AI party is moving again, and this time the guests are called agents. CEO Cristiano Amon says 2026 is the “Year of the Agent,” where software isn’t just answering prompts — it’s taking action across your phone, laptop, car, and maybe the mystery gadget you’ll forget to charge by Thursday.
The pitch matters because Qualcomm isn’t trying to win the old smartphone game. It wants to be the power-efficient engine underneath the next generation of devices, where tokens are the new oil and efficiency is the difference between “cool demo” and “real business.” If agents really do spark a refresh cycle, Qualcomm gets a shot at more chips, more sockets, and more reasons for Wall Street to stop thinking of it as just a handset supplier.
Dragonfly enters the chat
Amon also teased Dragonfly, Qualcomm’s new data center brand, which sounds a little sci-fi and a lot strategic. The company says it will share more details at its Investor Day on June 24th, and it’s already working with hyperscalers and global partners. Translation: Qualcomm wants a seat at the grown-ups’ table in AI infrastructure, not just the consumer-device lunchroom.
That’s a big deal because data center chips are the buffet line everyone wants in on. If Qualcomm can bring its power-efficiency pitch to servers and AI workloads, it could widen its revenue base in a way investors have been waiting for since the “we’re more than phones” era started getting real.
Microsoft is part of the story
Amon also highlighted Qualcomm’s work with Microsoft on on-device AI and agentic computing. This isn’t some ceremonial handshake photo-op — it’s part of a broader push to build an open ecosystem where intelligence can live across many devices instead of being trapped inside one app or one OS.
For investors, the takeaway is pretty simple:
- Qualcomm is still leaning on its core mobile business
- but it’s also trying to muscle into AI PCs, wearables, cars, and data centers
- and Microsoft gives that story extra credibility, because nobody wants to be the lone guitarist at a stadium tour
Big picture: Qualcomm stock got a nice pop, but the real question is whether “Year of the Agent” becomes an actual upgrade cycle — or just another shiny slogan that sounds great onstage and gets forgotten by breakfast.
