New tech boss, same MSCI machine
MSCI said it appointed Kashi Kakarla as Chief Technology Officer and Head of Product Engineering, effective June 22. He’ll report to CEO Henry Fernandez and join the company’s management committee, so this isn’t a ceremonial title with a shiny badge and a parking spot.
Kakarla is coming over from Intuit, where he spent 17 years helping build and reshape products and platforms used by millions of customers. In other words: the guy has done the whole “turn software into something people actually rely on every day” thing before.
Why investors should care
For MSCI, this is a pretty clear signal that tech and product engineering are still high on the priority list. The company lives and dies by the quality of its data, tools, and platforms, so a new CTO can matter more than it would at a random old-school industrial company where tech is just the spreadsheet guy in the corner.
A move like this can matter because:
- better engineering leadership can speed up product rollouts
- stronger platforms can improve customer retention and pricing power
- a fresh tech leader can help MSCI keep its edge in a very competitive data and analytics market
Big picture
This isn’t a headline that screams “stock rockets 20%,” but it does tell you MSCI is still investing in the plumbing under the hood. And in markets, the boring plumbing is often what keeps the whole house standing.
