Planet Labs isn’t just taking pretty pictures of Earth for fun — it’s turning those images into contracts. The company said its subsidiary, Planet Labs Federal, got an Option Year 1 extension from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency for Maritime Domain Awareness, plus a new award for its Global Monitoring Service.
That’s a fancy way of saying Uncle Sam wants Planet’s satellites on speed dial for maritime surveillance and crisis-response monitoring. And in investor land, government work can be a big deal because it tends to come with a little more predictability than the average startup-adjacent moonshot.
