IBM’s latest “we’re an AI company too” moment
IBM is widening its partnership with Google Cloud, and this one has the usual enterprise-AI cocktail: a new global practice, more consulting muscle, and a promise to help clients modernize the plumbing while sprinkling in AI magic on top.
The headline move is IBM expanding its Consulting Advantage platform with industry-specific agents for Gemini Enterprise. Translation: IBM wants to make it easier for businesses to use AI without having to assemble the whole thing themselves like a cursed IKEA shelf.
Why investors should care
The partnership also brings thousands of IBM consultants into the mix for a new Google Cloud practice. That matters because services can be sticky, recurring, and very lucrative if clients keep calling you back every time their tech stack starts looking like a garage sale.
The companies say the practice represents a multi-billion-dollar opportunity in Google Cloud Services. Big number, sure — but the real question is execution. Can IBM turn this into meaningful revenue, or is this mostly a fancy way to say “we’re partnering on AI, please clap”?
The bigger picture
For IBM, this fits the company’s long-running strategy of being the grown-up in the room when enterprises need help making modern tech actually work.
Big picture: if IBM can keep landing these AI-and-cloud deals, the story shifts from old-school legacy tech to “actually, maybe this thing still has some juice.”
