Alibaba’s AI remix
Alibaba isn’t exactly sitting still. On Monday, the company launched a new AI unit called Token Foundry, folding Tongyi Lab and Future Life Lab under CEO Eddie Wu Yongming as it tries to turn all that AI tinkering into something that actually prints money.
New faces, same big ambition
The bigger eyebrow-raiser: Alibaba also named Qwen leader Zhou Jingren chief scientist and head of a new AI Future Research Institute. Translation: this isn’t just a branding exercise — Alibaba is tightening the org chart around next-gen AI work and betting that a more centralized setup can move faster.
Why investors are watching
For shareholders, the story is less "wow, new lab" and more "can this unlock a real growth engine?" Alibaba still leans heavily on e-commerce, so any credible AI monetization path gives the bull case some extra fuel.
But the stock market, being the moodiest roommate alive, wasn’t exactly throwing a parade. Shares were down about 0.8% on Monday even as U.S. tech names broadly rallied, which suggests traders are still treating BABA like a chart in rehab mode. Big picture: the AI strategy is getting sharper, but the stock still needs proof, not just PowerPoint.
