New deal, bigger appetite
Meta is linking up with Reliance Industries to build a 168-megawatt AI data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which Meta will lease once it’s done. Think of it as Meta renting a very expensive, very power-hungry brain in India — one that’s supposed to help feed the company’s AI ambitions for years.
Why India matters
This isn’t just a random overseas flex. India is one of Meta’s biggest user markets, and the company is clearly treating it like a strategic chess square, not a side quest. The facility is expected to be delivered within two years and can be expanded later, which gives Meta a lot more room to scale without having to scramble for capacity every time AI demand spikes.
The AI arms race keeps getting pricier
Meta has been throwing elbows in the race against Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, all of whom are pouring money into compute, cloud, and model development. And in classic 2026 fashion, the data center will run on renewable energy and even use desalinated seawater for cooling — because apparently the future of AI needs both GPUs and a very fancy plumbing bill.
Big picture
Meta is building the kind of infrastructure that says, “We’re not dabbling in AI — we’re financing the gym.” The partnership won’t move revenue tomorrow, but it does reinforce Meta’s long-term AI commitment and could help keep its model-training and inference efforts from hitting a capacity wall.
