Google says: more horsepower, please
Alphabet’s Google is reportedly committing to spend about $920 million a month to lease AI computing capacity from SpaceX. That’s a very expensive way of saying, “Our own data centers are nice, but we’d like a lot more muscle.”
Why this matters
For you as an investor, the headline isn’t just the size of the check. It’s the signal: Google is still in full sprint mode on AI infrastructure, and that means the company is willing to keep writing monster checks to avoid falling behind.
The move also says something about the market for compute right now:
- demand is still running hot
- capacity is still scarce enough to justify outsourcing
- AI spending is turning into a real recurring cost, not a one-time splashy announcement
The bigger picture
This kind of spending can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it shows Google isn’t playing small ball in AI. On the other, it raises the same annoying question Wall Street keeps asking: how much profit are you willing to trade for the chance to win the AI race?
Big picture: if AI is the new electricity, Google is clearly not installing a few extra lamps. It’s trying to power the whole neighborhood.
