The AI hangover is here
Qualcomm’s been on one of those stock-market rides that makes your stomach do flip-flops. After a sharp multi-month AI run, shares got dinged as investors took profits and the broader chip group lost some steam.
That’s the immediate problem: momentum got a little too hot, and now it’s cooling off like a soda left on the counter.
The big Wall Street tell
The most investor-relevant line in the piece is JPMorgan’s take. Analyst Samik Chatterjee kept Qualcomm at Neutral but raised his price target to $265 from $160.
That’s not exactly a standing ovation, but it does suggest the firm thinks Qualcomm has more going for it than just handset chips. Chatterjee sees the company using its June 24 Investor Day to talk up data centers, automotive, and IoT — basically, the “we are not just a phone-chip company anymore” tour.
What’s moving the stock?
There’s also a little background noise: a viral social clip allegedly showing NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang endorsing Qualcomm helped juice the stock earlier, but doubts about the video’s authenticity took some fizz out of that trade. Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s new collaboration with SLB on edge AI for energy operations is a real partnership headline, but it wasn’t enough to keep the near-term unwind from happening.
Big picture
For investors, this is the classic tug-of-war between story stock and spreadsheet stock. The story still has legs — AI, autos, data centers, the whole buffet — but the tape is reminding everyone that even a good narrative can take a breather when valuations get frothy.
