The shiny stuff is taking a breather
Silver isn’t having its best Wednesday. iShares Silver Trust (SLV) slipped while spot silver fell about 2% intraday, as traders decided they’d rather obsess over inflation and central bank policy than safe-haven vibes for the moment.
Why the metal is wobbling
A few familiar villains are showing up at once:
- Higher real yields make non-yielding assets like silver a tougher sell.
- Rising oil prices are stirring inflation fears, which keeps the Fed in the spotlight.
- Deleveraging is nudging traders to sell winners and plug holes elsewhere in the portfolio.
That combo is less “moonshot” and more “everyone suddenly remembered the bills are due.” And because silver is a momentum-sensitive trade, even a modest shift in rate expectations can make it flinch.
The chart nerd corner
SLV is now trading below its short-term moving averages, and the 20-day slipping under the 50-day is the kind of bearish crossover that tells you the recent bounce has lost some steam. MACD is also below its signal line, which basically means buyers are currently on the back foot.
Big picture
This looks more like a digestion phase than the end of the silver story. The ETF is still up massively over the last 12 months, but when the market starts pricing in tighter policy, shiny things tend to get a reality check.
