Mastercard wants in on the bot economy
Mastercard is apparently not content to just move your coffee money and subscription fees. It’s now tapping Coinbase, Ripple and other crypto firms to build payment rails for AI agents — the little software goblins that could one day shop, book, and pay without you hovering over the checkout button.
Why this matters
That might sound futuristic in the same way “the cloud” did 15 years ago, but it’s actually a pretty practical land grab. If AI agents become real buyers, the companies that control identity, authorization, and settlement get to sit at the center of the transaction. And Mastercard clearly doesn’t want to be the last kid picked for the digital playground team.
The bigger play
A crypto partnership here also hints at how Mastercard is thinking about next-gen payments:
- keep its network relevant even if payment behavior changes
- use stablecoins and blockchain plumbing where it makes sense
- make itself the default toll booth for machine-to-machine commerce
That’s not an overnight revenue story, but it is the kind of strategic move investors watch because it says where the company wants to be when the next payment wave shows up.
Big picture: Mastercard is trying to make sure the future of payments still has a Mastercard logo on it — even if the customer is an AI agent and not a person in line at the checkout.
