The comeback tour is officially loud
Moderna just went from “what happened to that COVID stock?” to one of biotech’s hottest names again. Shares jumped almost 60% in five trading sessions after the FDA dropped briefing documents ahead of a key advisory committee meeting on the company’s mRNA-based seasonal flu vaccine, mFlusiva.
Why the market is suddenly optimistic
The vibe from the agency wasn’t a victory lap, but it also wasn’t a horror movie. Investors liked that the documents came off as fairly balanced, with some concerns about evidence gaps in older and immunocompromised patients but no major red flags that screamed “hard pass.”
That’s a big shift from February, when the FDA issued a surprise refuse-to-file letter over comparator-trial concerns. Translation: Moderna was getting pushed back toward the starting line. Now the company is back in the stadium, and traders are acting like the ref might blow the whistle in its favor.
More than just one vaccine
If you’re a Moderna bull, this is about way more than a single flu shot. The company is trying to prove it can grow beyond the COVID franchise and build an actual respiratory-vaccine portfolio. It also recently reorganized internally and hired Ester Banque as chief commercial officer, a pretty clear sign it’s trying to look less like a pandemic one-hit wonder and more like a normal drug company with a sales machine.
The pipeline wishlist is still doing a lot of heavy lifting. Investors are staring at possible flu/COVID combo and norovirus vaccines that could land in 2027 or 2028 if everything goes right. That’s a long runway, sure, but biotech investors have never met a long runway they couldn’t squint at and call a launchpad.
The ETF side quest
Meanwhile, the move has been extra spicy for the Defiance Daily Target 2X Long MRNA ETF, which rose more than 60% over the same stretch because leverage is basically finance’s version of adding hot sauce to a burrito and then wondering why your mouth is on fire.
Broader biotech funds like IBB, XBI, and ARKG were name-checked too, but the real story here is Moderna’s sudden resurrection. Big picture: if the FDA path keeps improving, this stock could go from “pandemic relic” to “legit pipeline story” a lot faster than the market expected.
