Another dent in the AI roster
Google DeepMind just took another hit. John Jumper, the scientist who helped build AlphaFold and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, said on Friday that he’s leaving Alphabet’s AI lab for Anthropic after nearly nine years.
That matters because AI isn’t just about GPUs and giant data centers. It’s also a very expensive game of musical chairs for researchers, and Alphabet has now watched another high-profile name walk out the door in the same week.
The bad week keeps getting worse
This comes right after Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer exited for OpenAI earlier in the week. Put those together and you get a pretty loud message: the competition for top AI talent is getting brutal, and Google is having trouble keeping its stars in the building.
For investors, the takeaway is less “one scientist leaving changes the whole company” and more “what does it say about momentum?” In AI, perception can move faster than product roadmaps.
Big picture
Alphabet still has massive scale, money, and technical firepower. But in a race where the best people are basically the quarterbacks, losing multiple starters in a row is never a good look. If you’re holding GOOG or GOOGL, this is the kind of news that doesn’t break the thesis — but it definitely makes the scoreboard feel less friendly.
