The big swing
Alphabet is apparently not done writing giant checks. The company plans to spend even more on capital expenditures in 2027 than it does in 2026, which is a wild sentence until you remember AI infrastructure has turned into a real-life version of “build it and they might come.”
Why the market should care
The argument here is simple: Google Cloud is growing fast enough that Alphabet can justify all those data centers, servers, and power-hungry chips. If cloud demand keeps compounding, the capex pile stops looking like a money bonfire and starts looking like the toll you pay to stay in the AI lane.
The investor math
That said, this is still a classic balance-sheet juggling act. More capex can mean:
- less free cash flow in the near term
- heavier pressure to prove cloud monetization is real
- bigger upside if Google Cloud keeps outrunning expectations
So yes, the spending is hefty. But if Google Cloud keeps humming, Alphabet gets to claim the kind of growth story Wall Street usually saves for the cool kids.
Big picture: Alphabet is betting that infrastructure today becomes AI and cloud profits tomorrow. If it works, the capex looks genius. If it doesn't, it looks like an extremely expensive hobby.
