Big steel, bigger cloud dreams
ArcelorMittal is basically saying the old “steel mill” playbook is getting a software update. The company is teaming up with Amazon Web Services to fold cloud infrastructure, AI, and edge computing into its global operations, with the goal of making plants safer, more reliable, and less energy-hungry.
From furnaces to digital twins
The company wants to merge pieces of its operational tech and IT stack on AWS, then use the whole setup for the kind of stuff factory nerds dream about:
- predictive maintenance so machines fail less dramatically
- computer vision for quality control
- process optimization to squeeze more efficiency out of every ton
- digital twins that mimic production lines before the real thing gets expensive
AWS is also supposed to build an education program for ArcelorMittal’s workforce, which is a nice reminder that even in 2026, the hardest part of digital transformation is still getting humans and legacy systems to play nicely together.
There’s a second deal hiding in the fine print
This isn’t just an AWS software story. Amazon also signed a multi-year supply agreement for ArcelorMittal’s lower-carbon XCarb steel for facilities in Europe and the U.K., including AWS data centers. Translation: the cloud giant gets greener steel, and ArcelorMittal gets another way to pitch its decarbonization efforts as a revenue driver instead of just a PR line.
Big picture: investors get two narratives in one package — a manufacturing efficiency upgrade and a cleaner-steel sales channel. That’s the kind of combo meal Wall Street tends to at least sniff at, even if it doesn’t always devour it right away.
