The AI side quest gets a hard hat
Nvidia keeps finding new places to park its AI chips, and this one is delightfully nerdy: helping map out the Earth’s molten underbelly. In a new partnership with PNNL and Fervo Energy, the company is backing a public tool meant to cut the guesswork out of geothermal drilling — basically a digital twin for the underground world.
That matters because geothermal has one huge problem: you can’t exactly peek 10,000 feet down and say, “Yep, drill here.” The partnership is trying to use AI to model subsurface conditions more accurately, which could make geothermal projects faster, cheaper, and less likely to turn into very expensive science experiments.
Why Nvidia investors should care
This isn’t about a flashy consumer product. It’s about Nvidia showing up in the plumbing of the energy transition, where its software and compute can become part of the workflow. If AI keeps becoming the brain behind industrial decisions — drilling, logistics, grid planning, manufacturing — Nvidia gets another reason to stay glued to the center of the action.
- PNNL brings the research muscle
- Fervo brings geothermal know-how
- Nvidia brings the AI horsepower
Big picture: this is the kind of partnership that sounds niche until you remember Nvidia is trying to be the picks-and-shovels supplier for pretty much every compute-hungry industry on Earth.
