Lawyers, meet your new plastic
American Express is helping launch a new ABA American Express Business Card for legal professionals, part of a collaboration with the American Bar Association and Mercantile. The card will be issued by Celtic Bank, but the important part for AmEx holders is that it runs on the American Express network — meaning the company gets another shot at planting its flag in a very specific, very lucrative corner of small-business spending.
Why investors should care
This isn’t a blockbuster headline like an earnings beat or a monster acquisition. But it does show the same old AmEx playbook: find a niche customer group, make the card feel tailor-made, and then let the rewards, protections, and network benefits do the heavy lifting. That’s how you keep the card ecosystem sticky instead of letting customers ghost you for a flashier offer.
The bigger picture
The press release also hints that this could be more than one lonely law-firm card living its best life. Mercantile said the program reflects growing demand for association-led financial solutions and could lay groundwork for future member and consumer offerings. Translation: if this works, it could become a template for more branded products. Big picture: AmEx doesn’t need every headline to be huge — it just needs enough of these targeted deals to keep the fee machine humming.
