The AI leaderboard isn’t as simple as it looks
If you only glanced at the user counts, you’d think ChatGPT is running away with the whole AI chatbot game. IDC estimates it has more than 900 million weekly active users worldwide, which is basically “everyone with a phone and a curiosity spiral.”
Google Gemini, meanwhile, is sitting around 200 million to 250 million weekly users, while Claude is reportedly much smaller at 40 million to 60 million. So far, so obvious: ChatGPT is the household name, the app your cousin uses to plan a vacation and write an email apology.
The money chart tells a different story
Here’s where it gets spicy: IDC estimates OpenAI is generating $30 billion to $40 billion in annualized revenue, but Anthropic may be pulling in $40 billion to $50 billion. That would mean Claude is monetizing like a heavyweight even with a much smaller audience.
Why? Because the customer mix looks totally different:
- OpenAI appears to be spread across consumer subscriptions, workplace seats, APIs, and platform usage
- Anthropic’s revenue seems more concentrated in enterprise subscriptions, Claude Code seats, and API-heavy workloads
- In other words, one company is winning the popularity contest, while the other may be winning the checkout line
What this means for Alphabet and the rest of the AI crew
Alphabet’s Gemini is still a meaningful player, but this story is less about a single company and more about the strange economics of AI. The real question isn’t just “who has the most users?” It’s “who can turn all that usage into durable revenue without setting a pile of cash on fire?”
Counterpoint Research’s estimates pointed in the same direction, suggesting Anthropic captured 31.4% of global LLM revenue in Q1 2026, ahead of OpenAI’s 29%. That’s a reminder that the AI market is still in its awkward teenage years — loud, fast-growing, and not remotely settled.
Big picture
For investors, this is the kind of reminder that makes you zoom out. Consumer popularity can grab headlines, but enterprise adoption is often where the billing software starts humming. And in AI, the user-count trophy and the revenue trophy may end up going to two very different companies.
