Xbox’s makeover comes with layoffs
Microsoft is gearing up for a major Xbox restructuring, and the bill is coming due in jobs: about 3,200 cuts during fiscal 2027, with roughly 1,600 happening right away. That’s not exactly the kind of “refresh” employees like to hear before lunch.
Why investors should care
This is another reminder that Microsoft is still tinkering with the gaming side of the house. The company has been trying to streamline Xbox, which can help margins over time, but the near-term optics are messy and the execution risk is real.
- Roughly half the cuts are supposed to land immediately
- The rest are slated across fiscal 2027
- The move suggests Xbox is still in cost-cutting and restructuring mode
Big picture
For shareholders, this is the familiar tech-company tradeoff: fewer people today, more efficiency tomorrow. For everyone else, it’s a pretty brutal sign that Xbox’s “next chapter” still looks a lot like layoffs with better branding.
