Small business, slightly less doom-y
The National Federation of Independent Business said its small-business optimism index rose 2.1 points in June to 97.4. Economists were looking for 95.7, so this came in better than the market’s baseline “meh.”
Why investors should care
Small businesses don’t make the nightly headlines like megacap tech names, but they’re a huge piece of the U.S. economy. When owners feel better about the future, they’re more likely to hire, spend, and invest in new equipment instead of clutching the cash like it’s the last slice of pizza.
The vibe check
This doesn’t mean everything is suddenly sunshine and spreadsheets. But it does suggest that Main Street confidence improved in June, which can be a helpful signal for the broader economy if it keeps sticking around.
Big picture: the economy doesn’t need every business owner doing cartwheels — just a little less nervousness can go a long way.
