China finally says yes
Apple’s long wait for approval in China is over. The Cyberspace Administration of China cleared Apple Intelligence for use there, which means the company can finally move ahead with a feature it launched everywhere else in 2024 but couldn’t fully ship in its second-biggest market.
Why investors care
This isn’t just bureaucratic paperwork getting stamped. China makes up about 15% of Apple’s sales, and Apple has been trying to explain away iPhone softness there without the “but the AI isn’t available” excuse. Now that excuse is gone, at least on paper.
Alibaba gets a turn in the spotlight
The rollout isn’t a solo act. Alibaba’s Qwen model will power Apple Intelligence experiences across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for users in China, which helps explain why BABA caught a premarket bid. Think of it like Apple bringing the fancy car, and Alibaba supplying the engine tuned for local traffic rules.
The bigger chessboard
There’s also a little market theater here: Apple is still trying to close the gap with Nvidia in the market-cap race, while investors are watching whether Chinese approval actually translates into faster iPhone demand. That’s the real test.
Big picture: the approval removes a major roadblock in Apple’s biggest overseas market. Now the question is whether Apple Intelligence can turn into actual sales, or just another shiny feature in the keynote slide deck.
