AI keeps thirsting for the boring stuff
Vertiv isn’t launching a flashy chatbot or a new chip. It’s doing something much less glamorous — and arguably more important: building more capacity for the cooling systems that keep AI data centers from turning into expensive toaster ovens.
The company said it’s investing at its Tognana campus near Padua, Italy, to expand manufacturing and integrated testing for data center cooling systems. The headline number here is the kind investors like: Vertiv expects the upgrades to double chiller production capacity in the region by the end of 2026.
Why this matters
AI is great at gobbling up compute. It is terrible at being cool, literally. The more dense the servers get, the more the industry needs advanced thermal infrastructure — which is exactly the unsexy corner of the market Vertiv lives in.
The new setup also includes a large-scale testing laboratory expected to wrap in early 2027. That matters because testing is where the company can prove its equipment can handle the next wave of power-hungry builds instead of just talking a big game.
The investor takeaway
This is not an earnings pop on its own, but it is a useful signal that demand is still strong enough to justify more factory spend. In other words, Vertiv is betting the AI infrastructure buildout is nowhere near done.
Big picture: when the AI arms race gets hotter, the cooling companies get busier. And apparently, a lot busier.
