AI, meet nuclear
Nvidia is popping up in a pretty unexpected place: advanced nuclear. The company was named a founding member of Project Prometheus, a research initiative led by Idaho National Laboratory and AWS, with X-energy joining as a Tier 1 partner.
The goal sounds very Silicon Valley-meets-energy-transition: use AI to accelerate the design, deployment, and cost reduction of advanced nuclear reactors. In other words, make the long, expensive, highly regulated nuclear timeline feel a little less like watching paint dry.
Why investors should care
This is not a revenue needle-mover on its own. But it does reinforce Nvidia’s favorite storyline: wherever there’s a big compute-heavy problem, Nvidia wants to be the chip-and-platform layer underneath it.
- X-energy is contributing its Xe-100 small modular reactor design and TRISO-X fuel designs
- The initiative is tied to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission
- The partnership is framed as a 3-year effort with $60 million in funding support
Big picture
Nvidia keeps finding new ways to turn “AI company” into “infrastructure company.” Today it’s nuclear. Tomorrow? Probably something equally expensive, regulated, and hungry for GPUs.
