The market’s new mood ring
Alphabet showed up with the kind of numbers that usually make investors do a happy little fist pump: 25% revenue growth and an 82% jump in cloud revenue. That’s the good news. The less-fun part? It guided below estimates and signaled even more 2026 capex, which is Wall Street code for “we’re spending like the future depends on it… because apparently it does.”
Growth is great. Cash flow still has to exist.
Here’s the awkward part for the AI trade: strong revenue can still coexist with negative free cash flow if the infrastructure tab gets too big. Alphabet’s heavy AI buildout is reinforcing a question that’s getting louder by the week: are these mega-cap tech names building the next decade, or just burning cash in a very expensive race?
Why you should care
For investors, this isn’t just an Alphabet story. It’s a mood check for the whole tech complex.
- If profits can keep outrunning capex, the AI story stays intact.
- If spending keeps sprinting faster than cash generation, valuation multiples may start looking a little extra optimistic.
- And when one of the biggest names in the market starts flashing this tension, the rest of the sector tends to get dragged into the same argument.
Big picture: the market still loves AI, but it’s no longer giving every spending spree a standing ovation. Eventually, somebody has to pay the electric bill.
