The AI race is getting a backstage upgrade
Nvidia keeps getting the headlines for its flashy GPUs, but this time the company is showing love to the part of the machine that usually lives in the shadows: advanced packaging. It announced a multi-year strategic partnership with Amkor Technology to build out packaging and test technologies for next-generation AI and accelerated computing platforms.
And here’s the spicy bit: Nvidia isn’t just cheering from the sidelines. It will provide a prepayment to help Amkor expand its U.S. advanced packaging capacity. That’s basically Nvidia saying, “We need more of this stuff, and we’d like it yesterday.”
Why investors should care
Advanced packaging is one of those unglamorous but absolutely critical pieces of the AI boom. If chip design is the engine, packaging is the transmission — and if that breaks, the whole race car sits there looking expensive.
For Nvidia, this move could help reduce a very real supply-chain choke point as demand for AI infrastructure keeps hammering the industry. For Amkor, it’s a nice vote of confidence and a path toward more U.S.-based capacity in a world where everyone suddenly cares a lot more about where their chips are assembled.
Big picture
This is another reminder that the AI boom isn’t just about who makes the fastest chip. It’s also about who can package, test, and ship enough of them to meet demand. In other words: the pick-and-shovel trade is still very much open for business.
