The “trust us, it’ll pay off” phase
Alphabet just reminded investors that AI doesn’t run on vibes. It runs on data centers, chips, power, and a lot of very expensive plumbing — and the company says it expects 2026 capital expenditures of roughly $200 billion.
That number is the kind of thing that makes growth investors lean in and value investors reach for the nearest stress ball. Alphabet is essentially saying the AI build-out is not slowing down, and that means more cash is heading out the door before it comes back in.
Why the market hit the brakes
The stock dropped 7.13% to $317.69 as traders tried to game out the math. Sure, Alphabet has the scale to spend big. But when capex keeps ballooning, the market starts asking a very un-glamorous question: how fast can cloud revenue and AI products catch up?
A few things are baked into the reaction:
- More AI infrastructure spending means lower near-term free cash flow pressure.
- Cloud growth has to keep looking healthy enough to justify the build-out.
- Investors are now watching whether this is a strategic moat or just a very expensive treadmill.
Big picture
Alphabet is still Alphabet — a cash machine with a giant search business and a growing cloud arm. But on days like this, the market is basically saying: cool AI story, now show me the bill and the receipts.
