Space phone vibes, but make it Amazon
Amazon Leo is back in the regulatory inbox, this time asking the FCC for permission to provide mobile services from space. Translation: the company wants its satellite network to do more than just float around looking futuristic — it wants to connect devices directly.
Why you should care
If this gets the green light, Amazon could turn its satellite project into a real telecom-adjacent business instead of a moonshot slide deck. That matters because Amazon keeps stacking optionality on top of AWS, retail, ads, and all the other revenue engines that already make its business model look like a very expensive Swiss Army knife.
The investor angle
This isn’t revenue tomorrow. It’s more like Amazon laying track before the train shows up. But the move reinforces two things investors have been watching:
- Amazon is still willing to spend on giant infrastructure bets
- Satellite connectivity could become part of a broader ecosystem that touches cloud, devices, and remote coverage
Big picture: Amazon doesn’t seem interested in just selling you packages and Prime memberships. It also wants a shot at beaming connectivity down from orbit.
