Space race, but make it Amazon
Amazon isn’t just shipping packages and renting out cloud servers anymore — now it wants to play telecom provider from orbit. The company plans to deploy more than 5,000 satellites for a new service, a move that sounds like something out of a sci-fi pitch deck, except it’s very much a real corporate strategy.
Why investors should squint at this
On paper, this could open up a new way to connect phones and devices in places where traditional networks are spotty or nonexistent. That’s the kind of addressable market slide executives love to wave around while everyone else wonders how many years and billions this will take.
For Amazon shareholders, the big question is the usual one with giant capex projects:
- Can Amazon turn a huge upfront spend into a durable business?
- Will this become a meaningful revenue stream, or just another shiny side quest?
- How much regulatory and execution risk comes with launching a satellite network at this scale?
Big picture
Amazon has already proven it’s willing to spend aggressively when it thinks a market is worth owning. If this satellite plan gains traction, it could add another long-term growth lever. If not, it may just be another reminder that even the biggest companies can have very expensive hobbies.
