Coinbase’s not-so-subtle message to Washington
Coinbase Global’s policy chief Faryar Shirzad took to Fox Business with a familiar but very on-brand pitch: pass the CLARITY Act, and do it soon. His argument? The next generation of financial rails is being built with crypto and blockchain, and the U.S. should probably not hand the keys to China like it’s an Uber ride.
Why investors should care
For Coinbase, this isn’t just political theater. Clearer rules could give banks, stablecoin projects, and crypto platforms more confidence to keep building, which is exactly the kind of environment Coinbase wants to sell into.
Shirzad also tried to widen the lens beyond the usual “number go up” crypto chatter:
- banks are getting more comfortable with stablecoin and blockchain tech
- Coinbase says it’s already working with several big banks
- the company is preparing for longer-term cybersecurity risks, including quantum computing
The bigger game here
The CLARITY Act has become the industry’s favorite legislative hope balloon. If Congress actually moves it, Coinbase gets to argue it’s not just a trading venue — it’s plumbing for the future financial system.
If it stalls, though, you’re back to the usual crypto purgatory: lots of innovation, lots of speeches, and not nearly enough rulebook.
Big picture: Coinbase is still trying to turn crypto from a regulatory headache into a national competitiveness story. And honestly, that’s a much better pitch than “please let us keep vibing in legal gray area.”
