The market’s AI hangover
Meta just stepped up to the earnings podium and, like Alphabet before it, got a very familiar answer from Wall Street: thanks, but we’re nervous about the bill.
The stock dropped after the report, which tells you the market is no longer clapping just because a company says “AI” a lot. Investors want to know when all that spending starts turning into real money instead of just a bigger grocery receipt for data centers, chips, and cloud muscle.
Why this matters
For Meta, the earnings call wasn’t just about ads and user growth. It was also a referendum on whether its AI ambitions are a brilliant long game or an increasingly pricey science project.
And if you’re holding the stock, the message is pretty clear:
- good numbers are nice
- AI vision is nice
- but the market wants proof that the spending spree can pay off without torching margins
Bigger than one quarter
This is becoming the same script across big AI spenders: massive capex now, questions later, and a stock chart that looks like it drank three espressos and then tripped down the stairs.
Alphabet already caught that vibe, and Meta is now in the same club. Big picture: Wall Street still loves the AI story — it just wants a better ending before it keeps paying for the sequel.
