The cobalt trade got a radioactive side quest
A new study in Nature Communications says cobalt hydroxide shipments out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo may have quietly carried a lot of undeclared uranium with them from 2000 to 2024. The researchers estimate somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 metric tons of natural uranium were exported that way — and less than 10% was publicly declared to the IAEA.
That’s not exactly a rounding error. The report argues the uranium was basically hitching a ride in the cobalt supply chain because it naturally co-occurs with cobalt in the DRC’s ores. Unless refiners deliberately strip it out, the uranium stays along for the trip like an uninvited passenger who somehow made it through security.
Why investors should care
This isn’t just a sci-fi plot twist for nuclear nerds. It lands squarely in the critical minerals universe, where supply chains already have enough drama to fill a streaming series.
Here’s the practical fallout:
- Regulatory risk: The DRC is already tightening control over its mineral exports with quotas and a new strategic reserve system.
- Refining bottlenecks: China processes about 95% of the world’s cobalt refineries, so any scrutiny around inbound feedstock could ripple through the chain.
- Environmental exposure: The researchers say another 1,000 to 4,000 metric tons of highly mobile uranium may have ended up in mine tailings, raising health and cleanup concerns.
The bigger picture
The report also arrives as cobalt prices have been under pressure and Kinshasa has been flexing harder over critical minerals policy. Translation: the DRC is trying to get more control over the stuff everyone else needs, while this study suggests the chain may have been leaking something far more sensitive than battery metal.
Big picture: if regulators decide they want assay testing, tighter export rules, or a full audit of cobalt flows, the cost of doing business in the DRC could get a lot less cozy — and the whole critical-minerals story gets another complication nobody asked for.
