IonQ says it’s joining forces with EPB to launch the Tennessee Quantum Communications Research Center in Chattanooga. The big selling point? It’ll be the first dedicated next-gen quantum communications R&D lab connected directly to a real-world network.
That matters because quantum computing gets a lot of headlines for being wildly futuristic and slightly intimidating, but investors ultimately want to know: can this thing do something outside the lab? A live network is the difference between a fancy concept car and a vehicle actually rolling off the lot.

This kind of setup gives IonQ a place to test quantum communication tech in conditions that look a lot more like the real world. That can help the company:
