The bull case is still alive
Alphabet got a reiterated Strong Buy rating, and the pitch is basically: yes, the AI bill is getting ugly, but so is the payoff if Google keeps turning cloud and AI into a bigger slice of the pie. That’s the kind of logic that sounds a little like “trust me, bro” — except this bro is pointing at 24% revenue growth and cloud revenue up 82% year over year.
Why investors care
The real tension here is pretty obvious: Alphabet raised full-year CapEx guidance to $195 billion–$205 billion, which is a giant neon sign that says, “We’re spending a lot.” That spending is helping fuel AI and data-center growth, but it also pushed free cash flow into negative territory in the near term. In other words, Alphabet is choosing the gym membership version of AI: expensive now, hopefully ripped later.
The market’s favorite math problem
The good news for bulls is that margins still expanded by 160 basis points, which suggests the business isn’t just sprinting toward the nearest fire. It’s still printing enough scale and efficiency to make the spending story look more like a long-term investment than a panic check written in a frenzy.
The not-so-fun part? You now have to believe Alphabet can keep growing cloud, monetize AI, and justify a monster CapEx budget without making investors too queasy along the way. That’s a lot of faith for one stock to carry, but Alphabet has a habit of making skeptics look silly.
Big picture: This is a classic “short-term pain, long-term potential” setup. If you own the stock, you’re basically betting that Alphabet’s AI arms race becomes a profit engine instead of a very expensive hobby.
