Another one bites the startup dust
Alphabet’s AI story got a little less cozy this week. Jeff Dean, one of Google’s longest-serving and most influential AI leaders, said he’s leaving after 27 years to co-found DiscoLoop AI with a squad of fellow Google alumni.
Why this matters to Alphabet
This isn’t just a sentimental goodbye post. Dean helped build a lot of the technical scaffolding that made Google, well, Google. When people like that walk out the door, it raises the usual investor question: is this a normal talent migration, or the beginning of a bigger brain drain?
The timing is the juicy part
The exit lands right after Google announced a broader leadership role for Demis Hassabis and a day-of-day overhaul of DeepMind leadership. So while Alphabet is trying to look all organized and future-facing, the talent ecosystem around it is doing what Silicon Valley talent ecosystems do: spawning a new startup before the coffee gets cold.
